EMILYs List Responds to President Trump’s Address to Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to President Donald Trump’s address tonight to Congress, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“The only thing Donald Trump's address to Congress tonight proved is that he's able to read a speech from a teleprompter. Underneath the empty promises and broad generalizations, Donald Trump further solidified his commitment to eroding millions of Americans' access to health care, turning away from our American values of equality and diversity, and nominating justices to the Supreme Court who will drive an agenda that puts more money in the pockets of special interests and rolls back women's constitutionally-protected rights.”

“To know what Donald Trump's priorities are, just look at what they've been since the day he took office. He has abandoned his promises to focus on growing the economy and creating jobs, and instead has surrounded himself with creatures of the swamp he vowed to drain. Donald Trump is not on the side of hardworking Americans, or the values that make our country already great. We will not only do all we can to support the Democratic women in office who are holding him accountable each and every day, but work to add to their ranks.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
