36,000+ Women Want to Run For Office
Democratic women are running in record numbers, reports EMILY's List
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, announced that since the 2016 election, over 36,000 women have reached out to them about running for office. In comparison, during the full 2016 election cycle, the organization heard from 920 women. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
“That 36,000 women are interested in running for office isn't just historic — it's a testament to the strength of our movement and of the Democratic Party as we approach the midterms. Women are fired up and ready to take back our country from a Republican Party determined to roll back the clock on women's rights.”
“But this isn't just another Year of the Woman. This is a sea change in American politics. Pro-choice Democratic women running in every state and every community across the country is and will continue to be the new normal. EMILY's List will be there every step of the way helping them not only run, but win. We won't be forced to the sidelines. We're here for the long haul.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
