EMILYs List Responds to Trump’s Expansion of Global Gag Rule
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Trump administration announced a significant expansion of the global gag rule, which prevents federal funding from going to international organizations that even discuss abortion. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Once again, Donald Trump has shown his true colors. Let’s not forget that this is a president who continues to make rolling back the clock on women’s rights – not only here in the United States, but around the globe – a top priority of his administration. Trump clearly does not care about the impact this expansion of the global gag rule will have on the livelihood of women worldwide – nor the countless lives that may be lost in pursuit of his backward and dangerous agenda. Make no mistake – women will continue speaking up and fighting back against this president and a spineless Republican Party all too eager to act as a rubber stamp on his policies.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
