EMILYs List Endorses Liz Watson in Indiana's 9th District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Liz Watson for Congress in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Liz Watson is a fifth-generation Hoosier who has spent her career fiercely advocating for women and families. Liz grew up in Bloomington and then went on to represent victims of domestic violence as a law student in our nation’s capital. She’s currently a faculty member at Indiana University and has previously worked for noteworthy organizations like the National Women’s Law Center, fighting for working families along the way.

“Liz’s strong, grassroots campaign has Congressman Trey Hollingsworth running scared — he literally skipped a town hall with constituents because he was unwilling to defend the GOP’s tax scam. Liz is a fearless fighter for Indiana, and she has what it takes to flip this seat. Let’s show her the full support of the EMILYs List community so we can take back the House in 2018.”

Liz Watson was raised in Bloomington and attended Bloomington public schools before going on to college and law school, where as a law student she helped represent victims of domestic violence. Currently a faculty member at Indiana University, Liz has spent her career fiercely advocating for women and families, including serving as director of workplace justice at the National Women’s Law Center, executive director of the Georgetown Poverty Center, and as the labor policy director for congressional Democrats. Liz and her husband live near her parents in Bloomington with their two children, who attend the same elementary school that Liz did.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
