EMILYs List Endorses Hillary Scholten for Reelection in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District

March 15, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Hillary Scholten for reelection in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Rep. Hillary Scholten’s passion and dedication to the people of Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District were crucial in allowing her to flip this seat from red to blue in 2022, and she is now a staunch advocate in Congress for defending reproductive freedom, ending gun violence, and championing the needs of West Michigan families. EMILYs List is proud to stand by her campaign for reelection because we recognize how crucial her voice is in the House, and we look forward to seeing all that she will accomplish for Michiganders and all Americans in the coming months.”

Rep. Hillary Scholten serves in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District to expand opportunity for all West Michiganders. Growing up, Scholten was inspired by her parents — a special education teacher and local sports reporter — to give back to her community, and to stand up and do something about injustices she saw around her. An invested member of her church and her community, she has lived her values by dedicating her career to service. Scholten earned a degree in social work and became a case worker for members of the LGBTQ+ community who faced housing discrimination. She then went to law school and clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit before working for the Department of Justice under President Obama. In 2017, appalled by the unjust policies of the new administration, she returned home to Michigan and joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as an attorney, and volunteered with the Times Up Legal Defense Fund, offering her legal expertise to those whom the system has left behind and ignored. She has also been a vocal advocate for immigrant child workers working dangerous jobs in poor conditions and has called for an interagency task force to be developed to prevent future exploitation. Rep. Scholten and her husband live in Grand Rapids, Michigan with their two young sons, in the same neighborhood where her grandparents grew up.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
