“First But Not the Last” Virtual Event to be held Tuesday, April 20, 2021 Recognizing Groundbreaking Women Ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C. — EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, announced today it will present its fourth annual pre-Oscars event on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards. This awards season, EMILYs List’s event, entitled “The First But Not the Last” is paying tribute to the women of Hollywood who, like Vice President Kamala Harris, have broken ground and shattered glass ceilings throughout the industry.

The virtual event will feature a panel discussion hosted by the EMILY's List Creative Council, where a powerful mix of entertainment industry and elected leaders will come together to spotlight the groundbreaking women who are leading the way in politics and the entertainment industry. Confirmed panelists include Emmy-winning creator and host of “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” Samantha Bee, Academy Award-winning actor, producer, author and activist Jane Fonda, Academy Award-winning actor, director and producer Regina King, award winning actress, director and artist Lucy Liu, and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. In addition to the panel, EMILYs List Board of Directors Vice Chair Paul Bernon will lead a conversation with Fifth District of Massachusetts Congresswoman and Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark. Additional event participants include EMILYs List Creative Council Co-Chair Chelsea Handler and more to be announced.

“It’s an incredible time in history for women in politics right now. There is certainly more to be done and I’m proud to work alongside EMILYs List to continue the momentum. During this historic year, we must also take a moment to celebrate the women making phenomenal progress and their remarkable achievements, like my sorority sister and glass-ceiling breaker, Vice President Kamala Harris,” said Yvette Nicole Brown, actress, writer, producer, host, and member of EMILY’s Board of Directors.

The EMILY's List Creative Council, aims to help the organization reach new, diverse voters across industries, geographies, and age groups. The Creative Council is co-chaired by film producer and Peabody Award winner Paul Bernon and comedian Chelsea Handler.

“This year’s panel lineup is remarkable. The dynamic power and progress each of these women represent individually, let alone together, is groundbreaking in itself,” said Emily Cain, EMILYs List executive director. “We are grateful and excited to inspire further change in entertainment and politics through an honest conversation together at the event.”

EMILYs List’s vision is to be a driving force of change in America by electing more Democratic pro-choice women to national, state, and local office, and this event serves to bring together politics and entertainment ‒ two areas where industries need to continue to make more space for women.

“Since the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office,” said Paul M. Bernon, vice chair of the EMILYs List Board of Directors. “During a time when so many state and local government bodies are seeking to stifle democracy and set women back, we must continue laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. I am proud to be part of this event and this amazing organization that helps those women lead.”

The fourth annual EMILYs List pre-Oscar event host committee includes: Adam Umhoefer, Amy Landecker, Amos Buhai, Bradley Whitford, Cate Park, Desiree Flores, Emmy Rossum, Hannah Linkenhoker, Jennifer Lin, Kathryn Hahn, Keri Putnam, Lizzie Thompson, Lorrie Bartlett, Maddy Roth, Marissa Devins, René Jones, Sara Benincasa, Sarah Clossey, Sue Kroll, Shelter PR, Wendy Greuel, Yvette Nicole Brown, and WME.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
