EMILYs List Statement on Florida’s Extreme Abortion Ban Taking Effect

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Florida’s near-total abortion ban will go into effect, pushing essential health care out of the hands of millions in Florida, as well as those nearby states. Last year, one of every three abortions in the South — and about one in every 12 nationwide — happened in Florida. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement: 

“When Trump and these Republican extremists say they want abortion access decided by the states, Florida is what they mean. They want abortion access decimated and essential care pushed out of reach from millions. This is the future Republicans want in every state across the country until abortion is inaccessible nationally. And they will not stop there: They will go further to take away birth control and IVF until they can fully control our reproductive freedom. 

“Abortion is on the ballot in November and we must elect Democratic pro-choice women like Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-SEN) and Lucia Báez-Geller (FL-27), as well state legislators like Allison Tant (FL-HD09), Lindsay Cross (FL-HD60), and Katherine Waldron (FL-HD93) who have stood up and been clear they will fight for Floridians’ reproductive rights. Now is our chance to vote out the anti-abortion extremists that implemented this near-total abortion ban. It’s how we will protect our freedom.”
