EMILYs List Congratulates Delia Ramirez on Her Victory in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Delia Ramirez on her victory in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Delia Ramirez’s dedication to her community and to the people of Illinois has propelled her to this moment, and EMILYs List is proud to be by her side. Her commitment to reproductive freedom, housing justice, and working Illinoisans will make her a great representative, and we know that she has what it takes to be a fighter for the people of her district in Congress.”
The daughter of immigrants, Delia Ramirez is the first Guatemalan American to serve in the Illinois General Assembly. Ramirez, a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University, has served as the founding executive director of the Center for Changing Lives, board chair for both the Latin United Community Housing Association and Logan Square Neighborhood Association. In 2018, Ramirez was elected to represent her home community in the Illinois House, and now serves as assistant majority leader. She lives in Chicago with her husband, Boris and their golden retriever, Lola. Ramirez is the first Latina to represent a Midwestern state in Congress.
Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested nearly $270,000 in a direct mail program, educating voters on Delia Ramirez’s long record of fighting for access to abortion in Illinois ahead of the primary election.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
