EMILYs List Congratulates Michelle Lujan Grisham on Her Reelection as Governor of New Mexico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on her reelection as governor of New Mexico. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has been at the forefront of championing reproductive freedom in New Mexico, and as governor she has ensured that critical reproductive health care continues to be accessible not only for residents of her state but for Americans from surrounding states whose rights have been violated by anti-choice extremist politicians bent on passing dangerous abortion bans. EMILYs List is thrilled that the people of New Mexico will once again have a fighter as governor who will stand up to anti-choice radicals who attempt to roll back New Mexicans’ freedoms.”

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is a dedicated public servant whose life’s work is fighting for all New Mexico women and families. A proud 12th-generation New Mexican, Lujan Grisham ran for governor of this diverse swing state in 2018 and won, becoming the first Democratic Latina to be elected governor in U.S. history. In 2004, Lujan Grisham was appointed secretary of the Department of Health, New Mexico’s largest state agency, where she expanded the number of school-based health centers, banned junk food from schools, and instituted teen pregnancy prevention programs. After leaving state government in 2007, Lujan Grisham co-founded and worked as president of a successful small business to help to provide access to health insurance to New Mexicans who were denied coverage. She later won a seat on the Bernalillo County Commission, serving the state’s most populous county before winning an open seat in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in 2012 with the full support of the EMILYs List community. A three-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Lujan Grisham served as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and is a powerful advocate for working families who don’t have a seat at the table.

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested $150,000 in a television, digital, direct mail and radio program through a partnership with A Stronger New Mexico.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
