EMILYs List Congratulates Sylvia Garcia on Her Victory in Texas’ 29th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Sylvia Garcia on being elected to represent Texas’ 29th Congressional District in the U.S. House. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is excited to congratulate Sylvia Garcia, a former EMILYs List board member, on her historic victory tonight as she becomes one of the first Latina women to represent Texas and the first woman to represent Texas’ 29th District.  Sylvia was elected to the Harris County Commissioner's Court — the first Hispanic and first woman to be elected to that office in her own right — and she has served as the president of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. In 2013, she was elected to the Texas state Senate, where she fought tirelessly for the women and working families of Texas. Whether she’s working on issues ranging from immigration to health care to education, as a lifelong Texan, Sylvia understands the toughest challenges facing her community and we can’t wait to welcome her to Congress.”

In the primary, Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, ran a bilingual digital program aimed toward working families.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
