SOUND THE ALARM: Joe Mitchell’s Anti-Corruption Hypocrisy On Full Blast
In case you missed it, Iowa Starting Line called out Republican congressional nominee Joe Mitchell (IA-02) for lining his campaign’s coffers with the very corporate PAC money he promised not to take. Mitchell accepted $17,500 from PACs in the homebuilding and mortgage industry as well as $16,000 from the banking and insurance industry. Part of his anti-corruption promise was a critique on lobbying — ironic considering he has benefited from and hired lobbyists for tens of thousands of dollars in the past to benefit his own development company, and even worked for a lobbying firm himself.
In the video, an Iowa reporter notes that Mitchell built his campaign by rallying against the political insider club, “but this money trail shows that Joe Mitchell’s already inside it. Collecting checks from the very industries that he used to regulate, all the while telling us that this time it’s different.”
While Mitchell spends his time cozying up to corporate interests, EMILYs List-endorsed Lindsay James is busy working toward a vision of Iowa’s Second Congressional District where opportunity is not a privilege for the few, but a promise to all.

Joe Mitchell’s anti-corruption pledge lasted about as long as his primary, Iowa Starting Line

Republican Joe Mitchell built his campaign around one promise:
“Number one, we are not taking corporate PAC money from all these big, huge, massive companies and corporations that Republicans historically have taken money from for a lot of years. But we are going to stand up against the establishment and big, giant corporations that have taken advantage of us.”
And Mitchell is correct about this. Big corporations have been taking advantage of regulators for too long in this country. But after going through the most recent campaign finance reports, Joe Mitchell might just want to sit this one out. Hear me out.
Since January, Mitchell’s campaign has taken $17,500 from PACs tied to the home builders and mortgage industry, the exact industry that he used to regulate for the federal government.

And Joe Mitchell isn’t a stranger to this industry. He ran the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s day to day operations as its chief of staff. He oversaw federal housing assistance at HUD. He is the guy that oversaw the rules that many of these companies had to follow, and now they’re writing checks to him to get him into Congress.

And on top of that $17,500 from housing, his campaign has taken another $16,000 from banking and the insurance industry’s PACs.

This fall, Joe Mitchell’s campaign will be about convincing northeast Iowa that he’s the guy that will fight the system that’s rewarding the insiders. But this money trail shows me that Joe Mitchell’s already inside it. Collecting checks from the very industries that he used to regulate, all the while telling us that this time it’s different.
