With At Least Two Flipped Seats, EMILYs List Women Deliver the Democratic Majority in the Virginia House of Delegates

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As races continue to be called in favor of pro-choice Democratic women across Virginia, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced two red-to-blue flips in Virginia’s House of Delegates, delivering the Democratic majority. EMILYs List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:

“With results still coming in, we’re thrilled that women have cemented the Democratic majority in Virginia’s House of Delegates. Heading into this election, we knew how crucial it was for Democrats to flip the House to protect women’s rights across the state. We’re proud of these EMILYs List women for standing up to fight for their communities and flip these tough seats. We’re one step closer to turning Virginia blue and we can’t wait to see them lead change.”

EMILYs List flipped seats so far:

Martha Mugler (HD-91)
Shelly Simonds (HD-94)

Three additional red-to-blue flip races with EMILYs List candidates running for the House of Delegates have not been called.

EMILYs List is also celebrating the victories of the following women in the House of Delegates: Jennifer Carroll Foy (HD-02), Wendy Gooditis (HD-10), Danica Roem (HD-13), Kelly Fowler (HD-21), Elizabeth Guzman (HD-31), Kathleen Murphy (HD-34), Kaye Kory (HD-38), Vivian Watts (HD-39), Eileen Filler-Corn (HD-41), Kathy Tran (HD-42), Charniele Herring (HD-46), Hala Ayala (HD-51), Sally Hudson (HD-57), Lashrecse Aird (HD-63), Karrie Delaney (HD-67), Dawn Adams (HD-68), Betsy Carr (HD-69), Delores McQuinn (HD-70), Jeion Ward (HD-92), and Marcia “Cia” Price (HD-95).

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
