Steve Marchand Makes Sexist and Ageist Attacks on Molly Kelly

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday perennial New Hampshire candidate Steve Marchand appeared on a WMUR Facebook Live broadcast. In order to prop up his fledgling candidacy, Marchand resorted to making sexist and ageist attacks on his primary opponent in the New Hampshire gubernatorial campaign. He called former state Senator Molly Kelly “timid” on public policy and said he would bring “the energy of youth” to the job [NOTE: Marchand is one year older than Republican incumbent Chris Sununu]. Julie McClain Downey, EMILYs List senior director of campaign communications, released the following statement:

“Steve Marchand is running so behind in this primary that he is resorting to sexist and ageist attacks. After unsuccessfully running twice before statewide, Steve is desperate to salvage this third candidacy, despite knowing that Molly Kelly's experience and record dwarf his own. New Hampshire has a history of electing strong, smart women leaders with consistent progressive values like Molly — which is why Granite Staters are going to deliver her a victory on September 11th.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
