EMILYs List Endorses Tanisha Sullivan and Kim Driscoll for Election in Massachusetts
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Tanisha Sullivan and Kim Driscoll for Massachusetts secretary of state and lieutenant governor. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to endorse two reproductive rights champions for election in Massachusetts at a time when electing Democratic pro-choice women has never been more critical. We know that Tanisha Sullivan (MA-SOS) and Kim Driscoll (MA-LG) will fight to advance justice across the state, promoting civil and reproductive rights while advocating for a better future for the people of Massachusetts.”
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Tanisha Sullivan has deep roots in the Bay State. Both her parents were born in Boston, and she was raised in Brockton. She graduated from the University of Virginia, and then received her M.B.A and J.D. from Boston University. Sullivan spent several years working in the media industry before opening her own small business. She has served as the president of the Boston NAACP chapter since 2017, where she has led efforts to expand access to the ballot box. She is now running for Massachusetts secretary of state to continue promoting civil and voting rights and electoral integrity. If elected, Sullivan would be the first woman and person of color elected as Massachusetts secretary of state, and the first woman of color elected to statewide office in Massachusetts.
Kim Driscoll is a mother of three, wife of a union bricklayer, and lawyer running for Massachusetts lieutenant governor. Driscoll made history in 2006 when she became the first woman elected as mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, a position she has been reelected to every term since. Driscoll began her extensive political career in 1999 when she ran and won a seat on the Salem City Council. Her lifelong commitment to public service and successful career in city government best positions her to address the needs of the people of Massachusetts as their lieutenant governor.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
