EMILYs List Endorses Shannon Hutcheson in Texas’ 10th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Shannon Hutcheson for Congress in Texas’ 10th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILY's List is proud to endorse Shannon Hutcheson for Congress because she is running to give Texas working families the same opportunities that enabled her to succeed. After receiving scholarships, work-study grants, and student loans to put herself through school, Shannon founded her own law firm where she has fought for causes including reproductive justice, access to health care, and served as a voice for survivors of domestic abuse. In Congress, Shannon will continue to take on the tough fights for those whose voices have often gone unheard.
“Shannon is challenging Republican incumbent Congressman Michael McCaul, an extremist whose agenda hurts the hardworking Texans he was elected to serve. McCaul and his deep-pocketed allies are sure to do everything they can to hold on to this seat, but she has what it takes to fight back and win. Let’s show Shannon the full support of the EMILYs List community and help elect this champion for Texas working families to Congress.”
Shannon Hutcheson is a lifelong Texas who graduated from Austin College and the University of Texas School of Law. Once she paid off her significant student loans, she co-founded a small, women-owned law firm. Shannon has served on the board of the Austin Children’s Shelter, helping oversee its merger to form The SAFE Alliance, which serves survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and sexual assault. She also served on the board of SAFE and was a founding member of Women of Hope, an organization that raises money for SAFE. Shannon lives in Austin with her husband and their younger daughter, and their older daughter lives nearby and is a student at the University of Texas.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
