EMILY’s List Endorses Jennifer Wexton in Virginia's 10th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Jennifer Wexton for Congress in Virginia's 10th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:
“Jennifer Wexton is an experienced legislator and talented legal expert who has proven that she’s the champion Northern Virginians need in Congress. As a state senator, she has been involved in the successful efforts to expand Medicaid in Virginia and has built bipartisan support for important legislation, including laws that have empowered victims of revenge porn, made online pedophiles easier to prosecute and secured a woman’s right to breastfeed in public. As a former prosecutor and judge, Jennifer is committed to justice and equality for all Virginians. These values and her strong work ethic will guide her to be a vocal advocate for working families in Congress.
“Jennifer is running against Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock, whose conservative beliefs and votes do not align with the district that she represents. Hillary Clinton won this district by 10 points in 2016, making it one of the most important seats to flip in our fight to take back the House for Democrats. EMILY’s List and our community of supporters are excited to work closely with Jennifer to win here in November.”
Currently a state senator, Jennifer Wexton has previously served Loudon County as a substitute judge, special justice, and assistant commonwealth’s attorney. She successfully prosecuted and tried cases ranging from criminals who committed domestic violence to misdemeanor traffic cases. In the state Senate, she has passed over 40 bills in the last four years she’s been in office, proving herself to be an effective bipartisan legislator. Jennifer is a Washington-area native who lives in Leesburg with her husband, two sons, and two rescued labrador retrievers.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILY’s List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
