EMILYs List Endorses Deb Haaland in New Mexico's 1st District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Deb Haaland for Congress in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Deb Haaland is a revered community leader and progressive activist who will stand up for New Mexican families every day in Congress. As a single mom who was raised in a military family, Deb deeply values hard work and public service. She made history as the first Native American woman in the country to chair a state party and now, she can make history as the first Native American woman in Congress – a milestone that’s long overdue.

“Deb is running to fill the seat left open by EMILYs List-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham. Following her win in a crowded primary field, Deb has shown she has what it takes to deliver this must-win seat for Democrats to take back the House. The EMILYs List community is proud to stand with this champion for progress.”

As a longtime progressive activist and community leader, Deb Haaland is accustomed to fighting for change on behalf of the community. When she was chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party, Deb protested the Dakota Access Pipeline in Standing Rock and divested the party from companies that had invested in the pipeline and for-profit immigration detention facilities. She is driven by her desire to fight for policies that expand economic opportunity for hard-working New Mexicans, and to serve as a voice at the table for those whose voices are often underrepresented. Deb is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe who lives in Albuquerque and is a proud single mom of an LGBTQ daughter.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
