EMILYs List Endorses Christy Smith in California’s 25th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Christy Smith for Congress in California’s 25th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Christy Smith is a dedicated public servant who has what it takes to win this special election, and EMILYs List is proud to endorse her for Congress. As a former school board president and education policy expert, Christy is a strong advocate for increasing funding for public education in the state Assembly. She is committed to protecting and expanding access to quality, affordable health care, including mental health and substance abuse services. Christy cares deeply about expanding economic opportunity and making sure all Californians have a fair chance to succeed.
“Christy is running in a special election for an open seat that is a critical hold for Democrats. The top-two primary election is quickly approaching and will be held on Super Tuesday, March 3, 2020. With former Republican Congressman Steve Knight – an anti-choice extremist who voted to cut taxes for the wealthy and repeal affordable health care – running for the seat he lost in 2018, it’s sure to be another competitive race.”
Christy Smith’s family settled in southern California when she was ten years old after moving around while her father was enlisted in the U.S. Army. She graduated from Hart High School and attended College of the Canyons before transferring to UCLA and receiving a degree in political science. Christy began her career in public service as an analyst for the U.S. Department of Education before serving on her children’s school PTA and founding the Valencia Valley Technological Education Foundation. She went on to serve two terms, including as president, on the Newhall School Board and was elected to represent the 38th Assembly District in 2018. Christy lives in Newhall with her husband and their two daughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
