EMILY’s List Congratulates Councilmembers Elizabeth Brown and Shayla Favor on their Election to the Columbus City Council
WASHINGTON, D.C. – EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Councilmembers Elizabeth Brown and Shayla Favor on their victories in the Columbus City Council election. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Councilmembers Elizabeth Brown and Shayla Favor on their election to the Columbus City Council. These dynamic leaders are committed to investing in the city’s future by driving rapid economic growth that will lead to a thriving and diverse economy that works for all. EMILY's List is confident Elizabeth and Shayla will continue to represent the people of Columbus well and demonstrate the importance of having strong progressive women in city councils across the country.”
Elizabeth Brown has been a member of the Columbus City Council since 2015 and currently serves as President Pro Tempore where she focuses on reducing poverty and increasing economic opportunity across the city. While on the council, Elizabeth has continuously demonstrated her commitment to strengthening Columbus families. She sponsored scholarships for pre-K students, commissioned a study that led to an increase in the minimum wage for city jobs, oversaw the effort to bring paid family leave to city employees, and passed legislation to promote diversity in hiring on city construction projects. Elizabeth is also the executive director of the Ohio Women’s Public Policy Network and a member of the Columbus Women’s Commission. She lives in the Victorian Village neighborhood with her husband Patrick and their two children.
Shayla Favor was appointed to the City Council in January 2019 after serving as Assistant Attorney for the City of Columbus specializing in zoning. As a Zone attorney, she implemented policies directly impacting local residents including the Vacant and Abandoned Property program and partnered with local leaders to improve neighborhoods, rehabilitate properties, and address public safety. Shayla also serves on the executive boards of the John Mercer Langston Bar Association and the annual design conference Creative Control Fest which provides a creative platform for communities of color. She currently lives with her husband Corey on the Near-East side of Columbus.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILY’s List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
