EMILYs List Congratulates Kim Foxx on Winning the Primary Election for Cook County State’s Attorney

WASHINGTON, D.C – Tonight, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx on her primary victory. EMILYs List is proud to have invested $370,000 in Kim Foxx’s reelection campaign. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Kim Foxx on her hard fought victory tonight, which brings her one step closer to a second term. During her tenure, Kim has created a more equitable, effective, and compassionate State’s Attorney office in Cook County. Her commitment to transparency and accountability has served as a model for prosecutor’s offices across the country and she’s only just getting started. In addition to making history as the first Black woman to serve in this important role, Kim has empowered women throughout her office by elevating them to every rank in leadership. We believe in her vision for the future and are excited to help her cross the finish line in November.”

In 2016, Kim Foxx made history as the first African American woman to serve as Cook County State’s Attorney. Under her leadership, the state’s attorney’s office has made substantial progress on critical issues including wrongful convictions, bond reform, and gun violence, and has become the first and only prosecutor’s office in the country to make felony case-level data publicly available. Prior to her election as State’s Attorney, Kim was chief of staff for the Cook County Board President and served as an Assistant State’s Attorney for 12 years. Kim was born and raised in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green Housing Project and received her B.A. and J.D. from Southern Illinois University. She is the 2018 recipient of the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, which celebrates an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office who demonstrates determination, civility, a commitment to community, and dedication to women and families.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
