EMILYs List Statement on the Second Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Dobbs Opinion Leak

May 1, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow marks two years since the leaked draft of the U.S. Supreme Court’s initial majority opinion for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization revealed a plan to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Since then, Republicans have introduced more than 380 bills attacking access to reproductive health care across the country, 21 states have completely banned or restricted abortion, and one in three individuals of reproductive age live in states with abortion bans in effect. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response:

“In the two years since the Dobbs decision was leaked, Republicans have been racing to go way beyond overturning Roe v. Wade and leave more of us without access to care. This is a race to the bottom for these extremists. If Arizona’s 1864 ban, Alabama’s infringement on IVF, or Florida’s near-total ban hasn’t proven the Republican anti-abortion playbook, let me be clear: If Trump and his Republican allies are elected, they will ban abortion across the country. Full stop.

“November is our opportunity to flip the switch on these anti-abortion Republicans and elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot who will protect reproductive freedom for our generation and the generations that follow. The time is now to vote out these Republican extremists who celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade and will not stop fighting until they control our personal health care decisions.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
