EMILYs List Statement on the Historic Inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on their historic inauguration. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Today marks a restoration of true leadership in the White House, and I am thrilled to congratulate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on their inauguration. Vice President Harris has made history today. It has been an honor for the EMILY's List community to stand with Vice President Harris throughout her career of championing justice at the local, state, and federal level and it is thrilling to watch her break one of the nation’s highest glass ceilings. Following in the footsteps of women like Shirley Chisholm, Geraldine Ferraro, and Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris has changed the face of power in our nation and empowered young women and people of color to reimagine what is possible, not just for themselves, but for America.
We know that our government works best when it looks like the people it represents, and we are thrilled that the Biden-Harris administration has already begun to execute on their promise to build a cabinet that resembles America. Alongside President Biden, Vice President Harris, and a Democratic House and Senate, EMILYs List looks forward to continuing our fight to elect more pro-choice Democratic women to build this country back better for women, working families, and communities of color.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
