EMILYs List Statement on the Anniversary Of Griswold v. Connecticut
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today marks the 58th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Griswold v. Connecticut. The case affirmed that the Constitution protects the privacy of married couples when obtaining contraceptives, and has protected that right for all Americans for 58 years. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement marking the anniversary of this historic Supreme Court decision:
“In a time when longstanding precedents protecting abortion rights and reproductive health care are under attack by Republican judges and legislators, Griswold v. Connecticut remains as an essential protection of reproductive freedom. For 58 years, this decision has protected access to contraceptives and cemented that reproductive health care decisions are private and meant to be made between patients and their medical provider.
“However, as we recognize the anniversary of this decision, extreme Republicans continue to try to deny access to safe medications that allow Americans to plan their own families. Their efforts to circumvent the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority to approve safe medications like mifepristone for medication abortions in the case Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA simply prove one thing – they will continue to ignore the pro-freedom majority and use every tool available to them in attempts to strip freedoms away. On the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, their willful attacks on fundamental freedoms remind us that to protect reproductive health care, we must vote every one of them out. EMILYs List is proud to support the Democratic pro-choice women who will show them the door.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
