EMILYs List Statement on Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s Retirement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, after decades of trailblazing leadership as one of the most powerful women in American politics, and serving as the first and only female Speaker of the House, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced that she will not run for reelection in 2026 after her current term in office ends. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is an icon who repeatedly shattered glass ceilings while blazing the trail for women to reach the highest echelons of power in our country. From serving as the first woman – and the strongest elected official – to ever hold the gavel as Speaker of the House, and the second highest-ranking woman in United States government, Pelosi is the embodiment of EMILYs List’s decades of work to elect women into this nation’s highest positions of power.
“EMILYs List is immensely proud to have been with Speaker Emerita Pelosi throughout her storied career, as she carved Democrats’ path to expand quality health care, create jobs, and improve life for working people. We congratulate her on the immense and long-lasting impact she has brought to her district, to the American people, and to all Democratic women in politics. EMILYs List will carry forth her mantle, carving the path for other fierce women leaders to build on her legacy of catalyzing positive change through this country’s halls of power.”
