EMILYs List Statement on President Biden Announcing Plans to Codify Roe v. Wade
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Biden announced that he will send an abortion rights bill codifying Roe v. Wade to Congress next year as his first piece of legislation if Democrats elect a real pro-choice majority in the U.S. Senate and maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. In response to this announcement, president of EMILYs List Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Today we are reminded of the colossal impact of the midterm elections this November. In only 21 days, who we elect up and down the ballot will determine our freedom to make decisions about our bodies and our futures. The Biden administration has made it clear that protecting reproductive freedom is a priority. Now voters have the chance to elect a real Democratic pro-choice majority that will restore this constitutional right that was ripped away by Republicans after almost 50 years of precedent.
“Abortion is on the ballot and we know that if Republicans are elected, they will enact a national abortion ban that eliminates access across the country. If Democratic pro-choice women are elected, they will protect our most fundamental rights. At EMILYs List, we also know that the majority of voters support abortion access and we’re working to ensure they know exactly which candidates stand on their side. This November, we must send Democratic pro-choice candidates to Congress who will work alongside the Biden administration to protect reproductive freedom and essential health care for tens of millions across the country.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
