EMILYs List Statement on Lizzie Fletcher’s Reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Lizzie Fletcher on winning reelection to Texas’ 7th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Rep. Lizzie Fletcher flipped this seat blue for the first time in over five decades in 2018, and we are thrilled to see her defend this seat for the second time tonight. Throughout her time in Congress, she has championed abortion access for all, and we know she is ready to continue fighting for our freedoms as Republicans chip away at reproductive rights across the country. We’re honored to have stood with this tenacious advocate in her critical reelection campaign.”
Lizzie Fletcher is a community leader and fierce advocate running for reelection to Congress to fight for Texas working families. Fletcher is a lawyer who has dedicated her career to representing diverse Houstonians who face many different challenges. She co-founded Planned Parenthood Young Leaders in 2000, and has helped recruit a new generation of leaders to fight for the vital health care provider. As a volunteer attorney, Fletcher worked to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in Texas, fighting to promote social and economic justice for all students. She is dedicated to helping young Houstonians find their voices, and served on the boards of organizations that create opportunities for students to learn and grow through dance and writing. A fifth-generation Houstonian, Fletcher has deep roots in the city that she has said “welcomes newcomers from around the world, that prides itself on scientific discovery, that serves as a hub of innovation, and that takes care of its neighbors.” Fletcher and her husband are proud to call Houston their home.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
