EMILYs List Statement on Federal Judge Ruling To Overturn FDA Approval of Mifepristone

April 7, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, a Trump-appointed federal judge in Texas attempted to block access to mifepristone, the first of a two-part series of drugs used in medication abortion, by ruling to overturn the FDA’s approval of the drug in seven days. Mifepristone—the most commonly used method of abortion—has been approved by the FDA as safe and effective for more than 20 years, with a safety record of over 99%. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement in response to this decision:

“Enough is Enough. This unjust decision is yet another example of Republicans playing politics with our bodies and lives, and we will not stand for it. At EMILYs List, we refuse to wait around while Republicans use the courts to sidestep the will of the American people and decimate abortion care across the country. Twenty years of data has proven the safety of mifepristone, yet this decision—which will significantly impact access—ignored all science and medicine in a last-ditch effort to control our private health care decisions. The Republican Party is in a race to the bottom to ban abortion nationwide, and we will not let them get away with this. EMILYs List is working overtime to replace Republicans up and down the ballot with Democratic pro-choice women who are committed to protecting our reproductive freedoms no matter what.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
