EMILYs List Statement on Election of Extremist Speaker Mike Johnson

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List Interim President Jessica Mackler released the following statement on the election of Speaker Mike Johnson, an anti-choice extremist who cosponsored a national abortion ban with no exceptions and celebrated prison time for medical providers who performed abortions:

“After over three weeks of infighting and grinding our government to a halt, House Republicans elected an anti-abortion extremist as speaker today. Speaker Johnson supports a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother and wants to enact the strongest anti-abortion restrictions possible. It’s a disgrace that Republicans fell in line, and Americans will remember next November that they are actively stripping our rights and freedoms.”
