EMILYs List Responds to the Inauguration of Donald Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Donald Trump was sworn in as president. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, released the following statement:

“Women across the country stand ready to fight back in the months and years to come. We are facing a new president who, alongside an all-too-eager Republican majority in Congress, has already launched a dangerous agenda that puts women and families at risk. From wanting to repeal the Affordable Care Act with no plan for replacement to appointing cabinet nominees who want to dismantle Medicare and defund Planned Parenthood, Donald Trump has begun his administration the same way he ran his campaign—by tearing women and families down. Not to mention, this is also a man who has bragged about committing sexual assault and who has repeatedly demeaned and degraded American women.

“Our work to elect more pro-choice Democratic women to office who will stand up to Trump’s dangerous agenda is more important than ever. Alongside hundreds of thousands of women and men marching tomorrow, we will fight to make sure our voices are heard starting today–day one of Trump’s presidency. Make no mistake – we can and will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
