EMILYs List Invests $150,000 in Effort to Keep New Mexico Blue and Secure a Pro-Choice Majority in the State Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today with just two weeks until Election Day, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced that it has invested a record $150,300 in the fight to protect Democratic control of the New Mexico Legislature and finally solidify a pro-choice majority in the state Senate. This is EMILYs List’s largest financial investment in New Mexico’s state legislative races and is part of an ongoing effort to increase and diversify women’s leadership across the country.

“For too long, anti-choice state senators have threatened the health and safety of women across New Mexico by refusing to expand and protect reproductive freedom,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List. “We’re proud to stand with our 25 endorsed candidates in both chambers, who will champion women’s rights and work with Governor Lujan Grisham to move New Mexico forward. With early voting in full swing and so much at stake for women and working families, we are confident that our historic investment will make the difference in the final push toward Election Day and help get our women over the finish line.”

This cycle EMILYs List has endorsed 25 pro-choice Democratic women for the state House and Senate: Shannon Pinto (SD-03), Brenda McKenna (SD-09), Katy Duhigg (SD-10), Antoinette Sedillo Lopez (SD-16), Siah Correa Hemphill (SD-28), Pam Cordova (SD-30), Neomi Martinez-Parra (SD-35), Carrie Hamblen (SD-38), Liz Stefanics (SD-39), Patricia Roybal Caballero (HD-13), Day Hochman-Vigil (HD-15), Debbie Armstrong (HD-17), Meredith Dixon (HD-20), Jessica Velasquez (HD-22), Liz Thomson (HD-24), Marian Matthews (HD-27), Melanie Stansbury (HD-28), Joy Garratt (HD-29), Natalie Figueroa (HD-30), Joanne Ferrary (HD-37), Karen Whitlock (HD-38), Christine Chandler (HD-43), Andrea Romero (HD-46), Billie Helean (HD-57), and Karen Bash (HD-68).

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
