EMILYs List Endorses Yassamin Ansari for Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Yassamin Ansari for Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Yassamin Ansari is a groundbreaking public servant who has fought to protect reproductive freedoms, secure college funding for lower-income students, and preserve our climate. Arizona will be critical in the fight to protect our rights this November and we need more voices like hers in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to stand with Ansari and we are ready to make history by electing the first woman to represent this district in Congress.”
Yassamin Ansari was raised in Arizona by immigrant parents who instilled in her the value of education and hard work at a young age. In 2014, Ansari began her career as an advisor in the Executive Office of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, where she served on the climate team that helped deliver the historic Paris Climate Agreement. She later went on to the Office of California Governor Jerry Brown as deputy policy director for the Global Climate Action Summit and as a senior policy advisor to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In 2020, Ansari ran for City Council to represent Phoenix’s 7th District and was elected in March 2021 during a runoff election — making her the youngest woman to be elected to the council and the first Iranian American elected to public office in Arizona. Ansari made lasting investments for the citizens of Phoenix, including passage of the city’s landmark Climate Action Plan, pushing for more than $140 million dollars to end homelessness, initiating pro-union policies, and fighting for reproductive freedoms. In 2020, Yassamin was recognized by Forbes as “30 Under 30” in Law & Policy, and in 2021, by the Phoenix Business Journal on their “40 Under 40” leader’s list.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
