EMILYs List Endorses Xochitl Torres Small in New Mexico's 2nd District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Xochitl Torres Small for Congress in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“As the daughter of a teacher and a social worker, Xochitl Torres Small grew up learning the values of hard work and dedication to her Southern New Mexico community. After working her way through college, Xochitl moved back to Las Cruces and worked in Senator Tom Udall’s office to help rural communities, including working to expand access to broadband and cell service. As an attorney, Xochitl has focused her work on protecting New Mexico’s water resources and looking out for the most vulnerable in the community.”
“With this open seat, working families of the 2nd District have a chance to elect a leader who brings New Mexicans of all backgrounds together to tackle tough problems – not one who would end health care access for millions of people and give big corporations tax cuts at the expense of the middle class. Southern New Mexico families can count on Xochitl doing the same in Congress, which is why EMILY's List is proud to support her.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
