EMILYs List Endorses Sarah McBride for Election to Delaware’s At-Large Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed state Sen. Sarah McBride for election to Delaware’s At-Large Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“State Sen. Sarah McBride’s career in public service has been defined by a fierce commitment to fighting for the rights of women, children, families, the LGBTQ+ community, and marginalized groups in Delaware and across the country. She is a dedicated pro-choice champion who has promised to stand up to Republican extremism and work to pass federal legislation reinstating reproductive freedom and protecting access to abortion care. EMILYs List was proud to support McBride when she made history in 2020 as the first openly transgender state senator in the country — and we are thrilled to once again help her make history and become the first openly transgender member of Congress. During a time when both transgender Americans and those seeking reproductive care have been disproportionately subject to hateful legislation and violence, it is critical that we band together to affirm that everyone has the right to bodily autonomy and the right to determine the course of their futures, their families, and their lives.”
Sarah McBride is the current state senator for Delaware’s 1st Senate District, where she has been serving since being elected in 2020 with the full support of EMILYs List. She made history as the first openly transgender state senator in the country. As a state Senator, McBride has worked successfully to pass legislation expanding health care access, improving public education, and providing paid family and medical leave. Prior to serving in the state Senate, McBride was the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and a leading activist in the effort to pass non-discrimination protections in Delaware. She has also previously taught public policy at the University of Delaware and authored a 2018 memoir, “Tomorrow Will Be Different,” for which President Joe Biden wrote the foreword. McBride is a graduate of Cab Calloway School of the Arts and American University, and a proud aunt of seven.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
