EMILYs List Endorses Mary Gay Scanlon in Pennsylvania's 5th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Mary Gay Scanlon for Congress in Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Mary Gay Scanlon is a dedicated advocate for justice and equality who has what it takes to fight for Pennsylvanian families in Congress. She has worked on behalf of children for most of her career, including serving on the board of the Support Center for Child Advocates and working as an attorney for the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania. Mary Gay currently oversees her law firm’s pro bono work for low-income clients and nonprofit organizations, leading the practice as it takes on issues ranging from refugee resettlement to domestic violence to voting rights. Mary Gay’s passion for and commitment to justice for all will guide her to be a voice for working families in Washington.
“Mary Gay is running for an open seat in Pennsylvania’s newly drawn 5th District, which Hillary Clinton won easily in 2016. This is a must-win seat for Democrats to flip the House – and Mary Gay has what it takes to help us do just that. Let’s show this champion for families the full support of the EMILYs List community and turn this seat blue.”
As a progressive champion for justice for many years, Mary Gay Scanlon is committed to fighting on behalf of children, women, families and others who are underserved. She currently serves as the national pro bono counsel at her law firm, leading the practice’s work for nonprofit organizations and low-income clients. Mary Gay previously served as president of the Wallingford Swarthmore School Board and worked as an attorney for the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania, among her involvement in other boards and initiatives dedicated to improving children’s’ lives. Mary Gay lives in Swarthmore with her husband and has three grown children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
