EMILYs List Endorses Marlene Galán-Woods for Election to Arizona’s 1st Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Marlene Galán-Woods for election to Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“At a time that demands bold leadership, Marlene Galán-Woods is meeting the moment and stepping into the fight against extremism. Galán-Woods is a former journalist, a community leader, and a fierce defender of reproductive freedom. In Congress, she’ll stand up to extremism, work to reform government, and fight for hardworking Arizonans. EMILYs List is thrilled to endorse Marlene Galán-Woods in the race for Arizona’s 1st District. In this critical House race, Galán-Woods is the right candidate to defeat anti-choice David Schweikert and we are proud to stand with her.”
Marlene Galán-Woods is a former broadcast journalist and longtime Arizona resident who has spent her career serving Arizona’s women, children, and families. Galán-Woods’s parents fled communism in Cuba to start a new life in America, and she became a broadcast journalist focusing on exposing corruption and holding leaders accountable. Her late husband, Grant Woods, served as Arizona’s attorney general from 1991 to 1999, and Galán-Woods and her husband invested in their community for many years by promoting arts, sports, and education for Phoenix’s youth. In 2022, Galán-Woods served as the campaign chair for now-Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and was at the forefront of protecting democracy while state Republicans spread disinformation about the election. She also served on the transition committee for Gov. Katie Hobbs and is committed to continuing to help move Arizona forward in Congress. Last cycle, Galán-Woods lost a crowded primary by less than 1,800 votes and was the only candidate Republicans spent against because they knew she was best positioned to defeat Rep. David Schweikert.
