EMILYs List Endorses Marie Newman in Illinois' 3rd District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Marie Newman for Congress in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“We’re thrilled to endorse Marie Newman as she campaigns to serve the people of Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. In a time when the president and GOP have made it clear that stripping away the fundamental rights of women is at the top of their agenda, we must have a leader to stand up against Trump. That is not Congressman Dan Lipinski. Illinoisans deserve a leader who will fight to protect the rights of women and families, and we know Marie Newman will tackle the issues that matter to her constituents — from choice and health care to transportation and infrastructure — head on.”
“On the other hand, Congressman Lipinski has time and again proven he’s out of touch with his constituents by standing in lockstep with the Republicans. Whether it's voting against women's reproductive health care access, undermining protections for the LGBTQ community, or opposing an increase in the minimum wage, Lipinski chooses his personal agenda over the needs of the community every time. The people of the 3rd District deserve better, and Marie Newman has proved she’s the woman for the job. We stand with her as she fights for the people of Illinois.”
Marie began her career working in marketing and rose to become a partner at the largest ad agency in the country at age 31. Driven to tackle new challenges and innovate, she left to start her own business and established herself as a successful entrepreneur. The mother of a child who experienced severe bullying in school, Marie founded Team Up to Stop Bullying, a coalition of 70 nonprofits, and authored a solutions-focused book to encourage anti-bullying policies and promote inclusion in schools across the country. Marie has also advocated for gun safety laws as the spokesperson for Illinois Moms Demand Action. She decided to run for Congress for the first time after the 2016 election because her community needed a champion who will courageously defend the fundamental rights so many Americans can no longer take for granted. Born and raised in the Chicago area, Marie and her husband, Jim, live in La Grange with their two children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
