EMILYs List Endorses Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and State Rep. Stephanie Thomas for Election in Connecticut

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Susan Bysiewicz for lieutenant governor and Stephanie Thomas for secretary of state in Connecticut. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“We are thrilled to announce our support for Susan Bysiewicz and Stephanie Thomas for election in Connecticut. Bysiewicz and Thomas are pro-choice champions with the experience and proven leadership we need in a time where women’s rights are under attack. These two women have proven their commitment to their constituents time and time again in their elected offices and we are excited to watch them expand access to abortion care for everyone.”

Raised on a small farm in Connecticut, Susan Bysiewicz first ran for state representative in 1992 and in 1998 she was elected Connecticut secretary of state. During her 12 years in office, she worked for government efficiency, streamlined the voting system to prevent voter fraud, and pushed to protect victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse by keeping their addresses private. She was first elected as lieutenant governor in 2018 and has been committed to growing Connecticut's economy since. She currently lives in Middletown, Connecticut with her husband.

Stephanie Thomas worked as a strategy and fundraising consultant for over 20 years in the nonprofit sector. Over the years, Thomas has served on the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Women in Development Nonprofit and many more organizations. Elected in 2020, Thomas serves as a member of the Connecticut state House where she is a leader in advocating for early voting and no-excuse absentee ballots and was the vice chair of the Government Administration Elections Committee. Thomas is poised to be the first Black woman to serve as secretary of state in Connecticut.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
