EMILYs List Endorses Charity Clark and Sarah Copeland Hanzas for Election in Vermont

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Charity Clark for Vermont attorney general and Sarah Copeland Hanzas for Vermont secretary of state. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is thrilled to endorse Charity Clark and state Rep. Sarah Copeland Hanzas for election in Vermont. We know that amid Republican attacks on voting and reproductive rights across the country, we can count on these pro-choice champions to defend the fundamental freedoms of every person who calls Vermont home. EMILYs List is proud to stand alongside Clark and Hanzas in their critical races, and eager to see them advance justice and opportunity for every Vermonter.”

Charity Clark is a lawyer, mother, and proud Vermonter running for attorney general. She has deep roots in the state: she is the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of small town grocers. Clark graduated from University of Vermont, served as a policy analyst in the Vermont governor’s office, and then went on to receive her Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School. In 2014, Clark began serving as an assistant attorney general in the public protection division, and in 2018, began working as chief of staff for Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan. Clark is running to fight for small businesses and consumers, protect the environment, protect reproductive freedom, and address gender-based violence.

State Rep. Sarah Copeland Hanzas is a distinguished leader in the Vermont state legislature, mother, and small business owner running for secretary of state. Hanzas grew up in Corinth, Vermont, attended the University of Vermont, and went on to teach science and coach field hockey, basketball, and baseball. Hanzas and her husband, John, have three children, and she spent eight years as a stay-at-home mom. In 2004, she was inspired “to give back to her community in a bigger way,” so she decided to run for office. Hanzas has served in the state House for 18 years, where she has championed climate action, groundbreaking sexual harassment legislation, and affordable health care for every Vermonter. Hanzas is running for secretary of state to defend the fundamental tenets of our democracy, from fighting disinformation and voter suppression to promoting electoral integrity.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
