EMILYs List Endorses Lori Trahan in Massachusetts’s 3rd District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Lori Trahan for Congress in Massachusetts’s 3rd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“As the granddaughter of immigrants, Lori Trahan knows how hard it is for working families to make ends meet. She was inspired to run for Congress because she wants to help expand economic opportunity so all 3rd District families have a shot at getting ahead. Lori knows that protecting access to affordable health care, improving public education, and creating good-paying jobs are all priorities for Massachusetts families. Her deep roots in the Merrimack Valley, combined with her experience as a local business leader and public servant, show that Lori will serve as a strong voice for progress in Congress.
“Lori is running to fill the seat left open by Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, an EMILYs List candidate who became the first woman elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress in 26 years when she was elected over a decade ago. Lori won a crowded primary and has shown she has what it takes to deliver this must-win seat for Democrats to take back the House. EMILYs List and our national network of supporters are proud to stand with this champion for working families.”
Lori Trahan, the descendant of Brazilian and Portuguese immigrants, was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. Her father was a union ironworker and her mother worked various part-time jobs to make ends meet. Lori attended Lowell public schools before attending Georgetown University. After college, Lori worked for Massachusetts Congressman Marty Meehan, rising through the ranks to become his chief of staff. She went on to become an executive at a technology company in Cambridge before joining a business consulting firm. Lori and her husband David live in Westford with their two young girls and David’s three grown boys.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
