EMILYs List Endorses Lisa Blunt Rochester for Election to the United States Senate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester for election to the United States Senate. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“After over two decades of pro-choice leadership in the Senate from the state of Delaware, it is critical that the next person we elect to serve in this role is a strong and dedicated protector of reproductive freedom. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester has been a champion for women and families for her entire career, and boasts a lifelong record of working to improve lives, fight for the vulnerable, and defend civil rights. We have already seen that she has what it takes to stand up to extremism in the U.S. House — and EMILYs List has full faith in her ability to continue that work in the Senate.”
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester is the current representative for Delaware’s At-Large Congressional District, where she has served the First State since 2017 and was with the full support of EMILYs List. Blunt Rochester grew up in Wilmington, Delaware in a family with a strong tradition of public service, and she has dedicated her life to helping women and families get ahead. Blunt Rochester began her career as an intern and then caseworker for then-Congressman Tom Carper, aiding Delaware families facing challenges. She was appointed as Delaware’s deputy secretary of health and social services in 1993, and in 1998, Blunt Rochester made history as Delaware’s first Black woman secretary of labor. In 2001, she was appointed again as state personnel director, where she worked to end racial and gender discrimination in the Delaware State Police department. Blunt Rochester also previously served as the CEO of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League, a community-based organization that provides direct services to people of color through programs, advocacy, and research. Blunt Rochester is the proud mother of two children, who both graduated from Delaware’s public schools, and lives in Wilmington.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
