EMILYs List Endorses Linda Coleman in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Linda Coleman in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Throughout her career in public service, Linda Coleman has always put working families first – and she plans to do the same in Congress. Linda is a strong advocate for expanding access to affordable health care, raising the minimum wage, and reducing student debt. She knows what issues matter to North Carolina families and has proven that she is a collaborative leader who works hard to find solutions for the people she serves.

“Linda is running against Republican George Holding, a vulnerable incumbent who’s so ashamed of voting to take health insurance away from millions of Americans that he’s avoided facing his constituents in town halls. Fortunately for people in the 2nd District, Linda would be an entirely different type of representative, listening to the community and standing up for them in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to be supporting Linda and we look forward to helping her flip this seat.”

A lifelong North Carolinian, Linda Coleman grew up in a family of ten children and worked in tobacco fields as a teenager to pay for school clothes. Linda began her career as a public school teacher, driven by a passion for public service. She was elected to the Wake County Board of Commissioners in 1998 and went on to become the first African American woman to serve as chair when she was unanimously elected to lead the board in 2001. Linda went on to be elected to three terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives and to serve North Carolina as the Director of the Office of State Personnel from 2009 to 2012. She currently serves as a trustee of Wake Technical Community College and is a powerful advocate for all North Carolina students and families. Linda is the proud mother of two children and grandmother of two.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
