EMILYs List Endorses Kirsten Engel for Election to Arizona’s 6th Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kirsten Engel for election to Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Kirsten Engel knows what it takes to stand up to anti-choice extremism and fight for the rights of Arizonans — she did it in the state House and state Senate, and now, she’s running to continue that work in Congress. Engel has also been a leader in the critical efforts to reverse the impacts of climate change and help make our schools the best they can be. She’s never backed down in the face of challenges from radical Republicans. Since her opponent, Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani, will keep doing everything he can do to restrict our reproductive freedom, it is absolutely critical that we support Engel’s campaign and take back this seat so that the residents of Arizona’s 6th Congressional District have a representative who is truly a champion for their rights.”
Kirsten Engel is a law professor, former state legislator, and mom running to represent Arizona’s 6th District in Congress. Engel dedicated the early part of her career to environmental advocacy after graduating from Northwestern University School of Law. Among her accomplishments is her successful effort to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize the dangers of climate change. She decided to run for the Arizona State Legislature after volunteering in her daughter’s public school and seeing the impact of years of budget cuts on Arizona’s children. In the Arizona state House and Senate, she worked to increase funding for education, secure the state’s water future and grow an economy that works for all Arizonans. Engel is a dedicated advocate for Arizonans, ready to make change in Congress. Last cycle, Engel came within 1.5 points of beating Ciscomani in one of the closest contests in the nation.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
