EMILY's List Endorses Kirsten Engel for Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kirsten Engel for election to represent Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Putting pro-choice women like Engel in office is always important, but with the latest attacks on abortion access in Arizona by Gov. Doug Ducey and state Republicans, Arizonans are even more at risk of losing their constitutional right to abortion. As a legislator in the Arizona state House and Senate, Engel has already fought to protect that right—along with expanding education funding, promoting affordable community college, and leading the charge to stop climate change. With abortion rights under attack, it’s essential to elect someone to succeed pro-choice champion Ann Kirkpatrick in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District who will continue to fight for reproductive health care for Arizonans, and EMILYs List is proud to support Engel in her campaign to be that next champion.”

Kirsten Engel is a law professor, former state legislator, and mom running to represent Arizona’s 6th District in Congress. Engel dedicated the early part of her career to environmental advocacy after graduating from Northwestern University School of Law. Among her accomplishments is her successful effort to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize that greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change. She decided to run for the Arizona State Legislature after volunteering in her daughter’s public school and seeing the impact of years of budget cuts on Arizona’s children. In the Arizona state House and Senate, she worked to increase funding for education and continued to advocate for our environment. Engel is a dedicated advocate for Arizonans ready to make change in Congress.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
