EMILYs List Endorses Erin Murphy for Governor and Erin Maye Quade for Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Erin Murphy for governor and Erin Maye Quade for lieutenant governor of Minnesota. Emily Cain, executive director of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Erin Murphy is a proven leader who knows firsthand, from legislative and personal experience, the issues that matter most to Minnesotans, especially access to quality, affordable health care. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Erin, who is a registered nurse, had to navigate the complex health care system and fight with her mother's insurance company at every turn. This experience ignited in Erin a desire to ensure that policy – health-related and otherwise – works for working families. She ran for the Minnesota House, where she has served as a legislator for over a decade. This same desire is what drives her to serve fellow Minnesotans in the state's highest office now.
“Both of these women have what it takes to fight and win for Minnesota’s families, and they have both earned the state party’s endorsement. One of the ticket’s potential Republican opponents is former governor Tim Pawlenty, a well-funded candidate who’s working hard to undo progress in the state. EMILYs List is excited to show both Erins our full support and help Minnesota make history by electing this all-woman ticket.”
Erin Murphy is a registered nurse who has served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for over a decade. She still maintains an active nursing license and taught nursing classes while serving in the legislature. Erin previously served as executive director of the Minnesota Nurses Association, where she managed the union’s budget, engaged in tough negotiations, and led the organization forward. Erin and her husband, a small business owner, live in St. Paul, where they raised twin daughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
