FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Emilia Sykes for reelection in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Rep. Emilia Sykes has been a strong and dedicated pro-choice champion ever since her time in the Ohio state House, fighting to protect abortion access even as Ohio Republicans did everything in their power to roll it back. Her commitment to reproductive freedom is why we honored her with our 2020 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, and it is why we continue to stand by her today as she seeks reelection to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. We know Sykes has what it takes to stand up for our rights no matter what.”

Rep. Emilia Sykes, a proven leader who served as a state representative and former House minority leader, serves in Congress to build on her life’s work of expanding opportunity for all Northeast Ohio families. Born in Akron, Ohio, Rep. Sykes grew up on the city’s west side and learned the meaning of public service from her parents. She graduated from Kent State University and went on to the University of Florida, where she earned both a Juris Doctor with a certificate in family law and a Master of Public Health. In 2014, she was elected to represent Ohio’s 34th state District in the Ohio House of Representatives, making history as Ohio’s first Black woman lawmaker under 30. In 2019, she was elected minority leader. In 2020, EMILYs List awarded her the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, which celebrates extraordinary women serving in state or local office.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
