EMILYs List Endorses Desiree Tims in Ohio’s 10th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Desiree Tims in Ohio’s 10th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Desiree Tims is an outstanding public servant and EMILYs List is thrilled to endorse her in Ohio’s 10th Congressional District. Desiree has dedicated her career to fighting for policies that work for working families. A Dayton native with extensive experience in activism and on Capitol Hill, she is uniquely qualified to represent Ohioans in the fight for expanded access to health care, affordable education, and economic opportunities. When she wins in November, Desiree will be the first woman and African American to represent her district in Congress, and EMILYs List is proud to stand with her.”
Desiree Tims was born and raised in Dayton, and she is a proud product of Dayton Public Schools. Inspired by her grandfather’s journey from sharecropping in the Deep South and being forced to leave school at the age of six to support household expenses, she became the first in her family to graduate from a four-year college. Desiree attended Xavier University, and most recently graduated from Georgetown Law. As an undergraduate, Desiree joined Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign as a volunteer in southwest Ohio. She went on to serve in a White House internship and worked her way up to various positions. Desiree then went to Capitol Hill to work for United States Senators Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. She was also elected to serve as president of the Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus. Her passion for public policy led Desiree to serve in senior advisory roles at Child Care Aware of America and League of Conservation Voters. Now she is running for Congress to fight for the American dream and to blaze a trail for the next generation.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 55,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices.
