September 7, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for election to the United States Senate. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“This election, we know that radical anti-choice Republicans will do everything they can to take back control of the Senate and pass a dangerous national abortion ban. But we also know that Floridians are ready for a senator who will fight for their rights, and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is that fighter. EMILYs List has been proud to support Mucarsel-Powell in her past service to Florida in Congress, and we are thrilled to endorse her once again. Her commitment to reproductive freedom, affordable health care, and civil rights for all will ensure that Floridians have a senator who is truly representing their interests in Washington.”

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a South American immigrant and former representative for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. Born in Ecuador, she became the first South American immigrant to serve in the United States Congress when she was elected in 2018 with the full support of EMILYs List. Mucarsel-Powell came to America at a young age with her family, worked her way through high school and college, and went on to work for Florida International University’s Colleges of Health and Medicine as associate dean. Since serving in office, she has also served as a senior advisor for Giffords, advocating for gun safety reform nationwide. She lives in Miami with her husband, Robert, and three children.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
