EMILYs List Endorses Christina Bohannan for Election to Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

November 9, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Christina Bohannan for election to Iowa’s 1st Congressional District. EMILYs List Interim President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“Christina Bohannan is ready to hit the ground running and get Iowa’s 1st Congressional District back on track. The contrast couldn’t be more clear: Mariannette Miller-Meeks is an anti-abortion extremist who’s spent her time in Congress working to take away Iowans’ rights, and Bohannan is a pro-choice champion who will always defend our fundamental reproductive freedom. EMILYs List is proud to endorse Bohannan, and we look forward to helping her flip this seat blue and make lasting change in Iowa.”

Christina Bohannan is a law professor, former engineer, and the former representative for Iowa’s 85th House District. Bohannan, the youngest of three children, grew up living in a trailer in a rural small town. When Bohannan was in high school, her dad got sick with emphysema and his health insurance was canceled. Her family had to choose between paying for his medicine and paying for everything else, but with the support of her public school teachers, student loans, scholarships, and hard work, Bohannan became the first in her family to graduate college. She worked her way through engineering school and then law school, graduated first in her law school class, and went on to clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. More than two decades ago, Bohannan began teaching law at the University of Iowa in several areas, including teaching constitutional law, torts, and intellectual property. In 2020, Bohannan ran for the Iowa state House and defeated a 20-year incumbent. She served in the state legislature from 2021 to 2023.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
