EMILY's List Endorses Chrissy Houlahan for Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Chrissy Houlahan for reelection to represent Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is proud to announce our continued support for Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. Houlahan began her distinguished career in public service long before she flipped Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District blue in 2018: she has served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, worked for Teach for America in North Philadelphia, and promoted early childhood literacy in underserved communities as the president of the Philadelphia-based nonprofit Springboard Collaborative. Throughout her time in office, Houlahan has championed policies that benefit all Pennsylvanians. She helped pass the Equality Act to ensure that members of the LGBTQ community are guaranteed the full protections of federal civil right laws and cosponsored the Raise the Wage Act which increased the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Houlahan is committed to fighting back against any efforts to undermine Roe v. Wade, and introduced legislation to support funding of the United Nations Population Fund’s work to provide sexual and reproductive healthcare worldwide. EMILYs List is confident that Rep. Chrissy Houlahan will continue serving her district with courage and integrity.”

Chrissy Houlahan’s story is uniquely American: Houlahan’s father, a Holocaust survivor, came to America with his widowed mother seeking safety and opportunity. He joined the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of captain and teaching Houlahan the importance of service. She attended Stanford on an ROTC scholarship, and went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force before going on to earn her master’s degree from MIT and growing and running a successful business. Houlahan felt called to run for office for the first time after the 2016 election. “I never thought I would run for elected office, but service does not stop when you leave the Armed Forces,” she has said. In 2018, she became the first woman ever to be elected to Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District and the first Democrat in over 160 years. Houlahan lives with her husband, Bart in Chester County, where they raised their grown daughters.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
