EMILYs List Endorses Carolyn Long in Washington’s 3rd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Carolyn Long for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“As a college student, Carolyn Long took a job as a union grocery store employee in order to help pay for her education. Now, she is running for office to expand economic opportunity for families like hers in Southwest Washington because she understands how crucial those opportunities are to hardworking parents and students. Carolyn has personal experience helping her family grow their small business and is committed to creating good-paying jobs that help all Washington State communities thrive. After years of teaching students about American institutions, public policy, and public law, Carolyn plans to defend our American values as they come under attack like never before. She is dedicated to preserving access to affordable, quality health care and will be the voice Washington State families need fighting for them in our nation’s capital.

“Carolyn’s opponent Jaime Herrera Beutler, on the other hand, has voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood. She has failed to stand up for the people she was elected to represent and has instead acted as a rubber stamp for her party’s harmful agenda. Carolyn will be the committed representative families in this district deserve, and EMILYs List is excited to stand with her in the race to flip this seat.”

Before moving to a rural coastal community, Carolyn Long’s mother worked as a waitress and her father worked odd jobs and started a small produce business. She started working at the store when she was 12 years old to help her family make ends meet and worked her way through college with a good union job at a grocery store. Carolyn went on to earn her Ph.D. in political science. While she was in graduate school, her family purchased a small organic farm and she returned home to help every summer. An accomplished professor who has written two books on constitutional law, Carolyn has worked at Washington State University Vancouver for more than two decades as a tenured professor and in administrative and leadership positions. Carolyn lives in Vancouver. She has been married to her husband, Kevin, for 23 years, and they have a 13 year-old daughter, Tennyson.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
